Titanium vs Tungsten: Which is better?

Thursday, August 9, 2007

So what exactly are the differences between these two very similar looking metals? How do they compare? Which one is better? Here are a few simple points to take into consideration if your are seriously considering purchasing either a tungsten or titanium ring.

1. Hypoallergenic

The first question, and perhaps the only, that you need to answer is this: Is the potential wearer allergic to any metals? It's not uncommon for people to have allergies to such metals as cobalt, or nickel and both of these metals are often used in the manufaturing of tungsten. Interesting enough, however, the only metal you have to be aware of is cobalt, due to the fact that even tungsten rings that contain nickel are hypoallergenic even to people who have an allergic reaction to nickel.

As for titanium, on the other hand, it is virtually safe for anybody to wear as it is very hypoallergenic. Even for people (such as myself) who have a very allergic reaction to most metals.

2. Hardness

Both metals are known for their supperior hardness over traditional metals used in jewelry such as gold, silver, or platinum. What needs to be kept in mind regarding these metals is the way they act under pressure. For instance, if you were to slam your hand in a car door, a titanium ring would bend out of shape and could pinch your finger, whereas a tungsten ring would more than likely fracture. For this reason, tungsten is a safer ring to wear.

3. Weight

Tungsten is a much heavier metal then titanium as it is 90% heavier than stainless steel, where titanium is actually 43% lighter than stainless steel. There are no distinct advantages over a lighter or heavier ring. After all, a ring isn't exactly a very large item that will put any strain on the person who is wearing it.

Get to know the person whom you are planning to purchase the ring for. Some men do like heavier rings for the simple feel of the weight in the palm of his hand. While as other men might be more prone to liking the idea of the fact that his ring is made of the same stuff as the space-shuttle. It all depends upon his personality.

4. Engraving and Resizing

The final point to consider is the fact that since tungsten is a much tougher material than titanium it is much more difficult to engrave and resize. Although engraving is possible, the result will be very faint and difficult to read on a tungsten ring.
